Lot 68 | Peter Lombard (d 1160)
Peter Lombard (d. 1160)
Fragment from his Commentary on the Psalms (Magna glossatura) in Latin, decorated manuscript on vellum [France, early 13th century].
Appealing decoration on a cutting from the most important medieval commentary on the Psalms.

c.215 × 148mm. 2 columns preserving a varying number of lines of main text and up to 43 lines of Gloss, lemmata underlined in red, the main text comprising Psalms 108:31–109:3 (‘dextris pauperis […] luciferum genui te’) with cropped parts of 109:4, rubrics indicate the authorities ‘Cassiodorus’ and ‘Aug(ustinus)’, the start of Psalm 109 with a large initial in green and red, infilled with predominantly blue scrolling penwork, and surrounded by red flourishing, smaller initials alternately red with blue flourishing or vice versa (the lower and inner margins severely cropped, but preserving what was probably one of the most elaborate initials of the parent volume).

Provenance:
(1) James Stevens Cox (1910–1997), with his pencilled number ‘17388’; a leaf from the same manuscript with his number ‘17387’ and the Psalm 101 initial was sold at Bloomsbury Book Auctions, 6 July 2021, lot 27.
(2) Colker MS 532, doubtless acquired from Maggs, probably after 2004.
