A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE NATIVITY OF CHRIST FROM A CHURCH ICONOSTASIS Russian, early 17th century Russland, Anfang 17. Jh. Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The haloes made of gold. Traditionally painted featuring the Mother of God sitting beside the newly born infant Emanuel, surrounded with colourful subsidiary scenes showing the Three Kings following the star, Saint Joseph being tempted by the Devil disguised as a sheperd, the flight into Egypt and the Mother of God enthroned and accepting gifts from the Three Kings. Painted against a mountainous landscape. The background stripped to gesso, minimally restored. 87 x 67.8 cm.
