A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL EMPIRE ORMOLU AND PATINATED-BRONZE SEVEN-LIGHT CANDELABRA

ATTRIBUTED TO CLAUDE GALLE, CIRCA 1805

Each in the form of a classically-draped maiden holding a flaming oil-lamp applied with reclining winged female figures terminating in foliate scrolls surmounted by birds, below two tiers of scrolled branches issuing from a central baluster stem cast with stiff-leaf and anthemia and terminating in an urn-shaped nozzle issuing three projecting brackets with ram's head terminals surmounted with butterflies, the lower tier of branches applied with satyr masks, foliate-wrapped and terminating in classical ewer-shaped nozzles, the upper tier of branches terminating in urn-shaped nozzles cast with palmettes, on a concaved tripartite pedestal case with egg-and-dart cornice, the front applied with a central owl within a circular recess surrounded by stars above the figure of Mercury on a cockerell-drawn chariot, the sides applied with rams within scrolling foliage, the canted angles headed by masks of Juno with trailing palmettes terminating chimeras in the form of winged horses with snake tails, on a conforming ormolu plinth; restorations to three branches, one nozzle later
