Lot 156 | A Study Group
A Study Group
A study group of leaves and fragments, in Latin, manuscripts on vellum [10th to 15th centuries]
A selection of manuscripts from Western Europe, almost all liturgical or theological in nature, with an Italian renewal of rights from the fourteenth century, and part of an oversized Bible leaf from Germany.

Comprising:
(i) A fragment from a large Bible [Germany, 10/11th century].
c.395 × 140mm. A vertical strip from a very large leaf, preserving part of a column of 45 lines, written in a rather flat Caroline minuscule in light brown ink, text comprising Ecclesiasticus 7:33-8:15, 10:12-10:32 (part of a second column visible, some text lost due to trimming).
Provenance: Colker MS 524.

(ii) A leaf from a Sacramentary or Missal [France, 12th century].
c.205mm × 145mm. 18 lines, in a protogothic bookhand in brown ink, inclined to the right, with text comprising part of both the minor and major Benedictio salis et aquae; see Patrologia Latina, 138, 1039C (holes from worms and ruling, lower margin cropped).
Provenance: Colker MS 552; acquired from Quaritch.

(iii) A leaf from a Bible [Italy, 13th century].
c.300 × 195mm. 2 columns, ruled in plummet for 63 lines, written in a gothic bookhand, with pen-drawn initials with ornamental flourishes; text comprising Ecclesiasticus 45:1-50:18.
Provenance: (1) Otto F. Ege (Gwara, Otto Ege’s Manuscripts, 2013, HL58); (2) Colker MS 16; acquired in 1947 from P. Duschnes.

(iv) Two leaves from Thomas Aquinas, Summa Contra Gentiles [England, 14th century].
The first leaf measures c.188 × 130mm, the second 190 × 95mm. 2 columns of 44 lines, ruled in plummet; text comprises part of Book 3, Chapter 154 of Thomas Aquinas's Summa Contra Gentiles (the leaves have been sewn together, margins cropped).
Provenance: Colker MS 201; acquired in 1972 from Maggs.

(v) A Renewal of rights to certain lands, as authorised by Petrus 'vicecomes ecclesie Rauennatis', Italy, A.D. 1357.
c.260 × 135mm. 26 lines in a cursive notarial hand, the document notarised at the bottom (reverse a little soiled).
Provenance: Colker MS 154; acquired in 1969 from Renzo Rizzi.

(vi) A gathering of 8 leaves from a Calendar [Southern Netherlands, Bruges?, second half 15th century].
c.83 × 65mm. Ruled in plummet for 16 lines, written in a small gothic bookhand, with 8 ornamental initials with foliate ornament, leaves comprising May to December (recto of first leaf torn and very faded, small holes throughout).
Provenance: (1) The sparse entries include Basil (14 June) and Bavo (1 October) in red, and Donatian (14 October) in ordinary ink, suggesting production in Bruges, but the rounded gothic script suggests the manuscript was made for an Italian patron; (2) Colker MS 441; acquired in 1991 from Maggs.
