Distemper on cloth, framed in a silk brocade mounting. Sino-Tibetan, 18th/19th century

This thangka belongs to a set illustrating the 108 stories of the Bodhisattva Vadanakalpalata. In the center is a depiction of of Buddha Shakyamuni on a lotus pedestal, framed by a large blue and orange aureole. His head is framed by an additional green halo. His hands performing the bhumisparsha mudra, in the palm of his left hand a small dharma wheel. The central depiction of the Buddha is surrounded by various scenes with Lamas and disciples in an idealized landscape with trees, soft hills and pavilions.

Shape: Rectangular vertical shape
Dimensions: 86,5 x 56 cm (painting size), 149 x 86 cm (mounting)
Condition: Overall good age-related condition, slightly fainted, few cracks and wear, the mounting with wear and slightly ripped.
