Distemper on cloth, framed in linen mounting with silk. Sino-Tibetan, 18th/19th century

Amitayus, the Sambhogakaya (enjoyment body) aspect of Buddha Amitabha, is depicted here as the central deity surrounded by a multitude of emanations. The smaller versions of Amitayus are arranged in rows and columns, with one of them alone just below the lotus throne. The Buddha of endless life, depicted here in gold, is seated in vajra on a lotus throne with both hands in the meditation mudra, supporting a long life vase. The lotus throne is richly adorned with leaves, lotus flowers in various colors and lotus buds. Amitayus wears a golden crown, large golden earrings and necklaces and bracelets decorated with gems and jewels.
