A VERY IMPORTANT ICON SHOWING THE WASHING OF THE FEET Russian, Moscow, circa 1500 Tempera on wood panel with levkas and kovcheg. Against an architectural background, Christ washes the feet of St. Peter. The twelve apostles shown are represented in two registers. The background stripped to gesso, paint blisterings, partially restored. 59 x 50.4 cm. zum bevorzugten Thema der Ikonenmaler des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts. Eine Ikonostasen-Ikone The washing of feet as a ritual act symbolising hospitality in the Orient was among the preferred subjects of the icon painters of the 15th and 16th centuries. The iconography of this relatively rare subject with Christ standing on the left is found on an icon from the Old Katholikon of the Trinity Lavra which was painted between 1425 and 1427. The pictorial composition with Christ shown standing on the left edge as well as the elongated proportions of the robust figures are related. Another example of the Moscow School from 1497 in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg shows an almost identical colouring of the red tones, but also of the shades of the vestments in blue tones. Regarding the conception of the architectural elements of the background, an icon formerly part of the iconostasis of the Church of St. Michael and St. Gabriel Archangel from Gorodets from the 16th century can be referred to, which is now in the museum in Pskov. Very similar here is the design of the roof tiles, which are executed as shaded panels.

Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund über Leinwand.. 59 x 50,4 cm. Die Fußwaschung als rituelle Handlung, die im Orient Gastfreundschaft symbolisiert, zählte zum bevorzugten Thema der Ikonenmaler des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts. Eine Ikonostasen-Ikone des gleichen Themas aus der Dreifaltigkeits-Kathedrale der Dreifaltigkeits-Sergius-Klosters entstand zwischen 1425 und 1427. Der Bildaufbau mit Christus, der am linken Rand stehend gezeigt wird, wie auch die gelängten Proportionen der Figuren sind miteinander verwandt. Eine weiteres Beispiel der Moskauer Malschule von 1497 im Russischen Museum in St. Petersburg weist ein nahezu identisches Kolorit der Rottöne, aber auch der Schattierungen der Gewänder in Blautönen auf. In Hinblick auf die Auffassung der architektonischen Elemente des Hintergrundes kann eine Ikone ursprünglich Teil der Ikonostase der Michael- und Gabriel-Erzengel-Kirche aus Gorodets aus dem 16. Jahrhundert herangezogen werden, die sich heute im Museum in Pskow befindet. Sehr ähnlich sind ist hier die Gestaltung der Dachziegel, die als schattierte Flächen ausgeführt sind.
