Lot 209 | A visit to Gettysburg during the Camp David negotiations
Estimate value
$ 3 000 – 5 000
245 x 192mm (visible). Matted and framed.
Glossy black-and-white photograph of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat during the height of the negotiations of the Camp David Accords, signed boldly by each man. The image shows the three world leaders at Gettysburg National Park, examining a Civil War cannon with Carter's daughter Amy at his front. Carter himself brokered the peace deal over thirteen days in the respite of Maryland’s Catoctin Mountains. At one point, with tensions mounting and an impasse looming, Carter took both men to visit Gettysburg in the hopes that the brutality of the Civil War would prod both men to end their animosity. Sadat and Begin were later awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978 for their contributions to the agreement.
