Lot 158 | A Wild Thing for Peace
Estimate value
$ 4 000 – 6 000
252 x 203mm image size on larger sheet, matted and framed with color study to 710 x 495mm.
Heart-warming drawing of one of Sendak's most beloved characters. The Wild Thing "Moishe" sits in the trees with a grin on his face and a family of nesting birds in his hair (right between his horns). The Big Book of Peace was a collaboration of dozens of children's authors and illustrators featuring 17 short stories on the absurdity of conflict. This sketch drawing is framed with an original watercolor after Maurice Sendak; this would have been used as a color guide by the publishers. Published: The Big Book of Peace. New York: Dutton Children's Books, 1990, front cover dust jacket art.
