Fünf kolorierte Kupferstichkarten auf Bütten. Bei Ortelius, Antwerpen, 1570 bzw. 1587. Ca. 49 x 58,5 cm. Rest. Min. gebräunt, tlw. Knickfalten. Rahmen min. besch. (54 x 67 cm).

Vorliegend sind die ersten fünf Karten von Ortelius Publikation "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Unter diesem Titel veröffentlichte Abraham Ortelius 1570 eine Sammlung von ursprünglich 53 Karten, die zwischen 1570 und 1641 in zahlreichen und immer wieder erweiterten Auflagen erschienen ist. Das "Theatrum Orbius Terrarum" wird oftmals als der erste moderne Weltatlas genannt - der erste, der seine Kartensammlung auch als "Atlas" betitelt hat, war dann Ortelius Zeitgenosse Gerhard Mercator mit dem "Atlas sive Cosmographicae meditationes de fabrica mundi et fabricati figura".

Die Karten bei Ortelius basieren zum Teil auf den Darstellungen anderer Kartographen seiner Zeit. Mit seiner Kartensammlung hat Ortelius ein vereinheitlichtes, ästhetisch hochwertiges und im Buchformat gut lesbares Kartenprogramm zusammengestellt, das jedem Interessierten einen Blick auf die Welt seiner Zeit gegeben und eine imaginäre Reise durch diese Welt ermöglicht hat.
