A landmark in the mapping of China, the first map of the country to appear in a European atlas; 'this map remained the standard type for the interior of China for over sixty years' (Tooley). It was based on a manuscript map made by the Portuguese Jesuit, Ludovicus Georgius. Double-page engraved map, coloured by a contemporary hand, Italian text on verso, title cartouche surmounted by two putti at lower left, privilege and scale bar set in two decorative cartouches, 370 x 470mm (plate mark), 489 x 590mm (sheet).
