Estimate value
€ 400 – 600
A copy in red morocco of this renown work dedicated to Westminster Abbey and accompanied by numerous hand-colored plates. First edition, second issue with the first plate in vol. II signed by Pugin (and not by Mackenzie).
2 volumes, 4to (340 x 280mm). Half-titles, engraved portrait, plan of the Abbey and 81 engraved plates in contemporary colouring (some light and occasional browning and spotting to text, some offsetting). Contemporary red morocco by Benedict decorated in gilt, gilt edges and marbled endpapers (front cover of the first volume detached, second volume with joints reinforced, spine ends chipped). Many of the copies examined have 83 plates like the present example, but the index calls for another plate which is missing in this copy. Provenance: John Louis Ketterlinus (1852-1932; son of lithographer Eugene Ketterlinus from Philadelphia; bookplate). (2)
