Estimate value
€ 200 – 300
First edition of the travel report undertaken by Michel Adanson in Senegal. The first part takes into consideration the journey made between 1748 and 1853, while the second part consists of a detailed description of the shells of the region. Adanson was almost certainly the first zoologist to use a consistent binomial nomenclature as this volume was published a year before the tenth edition of Linnaeus Systema Naturae.
2 parts in one volume, 4to (249 x 192mm). Title with woodcut arms, an engraved folding map, 19 engraved plates, numerous woodcut head-and-tail pieces and initials (small trace of worming repaired to the final leaves of text that also touches the inner margin of the first plates, light browning and scattered spotting, some small stains, one of which on a plate). Contemporary mottled calf with decorations and title in gilt on spine label, red edges, marbled endpapers (rebacked with part of the original spine preserved, but with an expert restoration on the lower part, other minor defects).
