Further details

ADRIEN-AIMÉ TAUNAY, A SAILING BOAT IN CAROLINES ISLANDS, GRAPHITE, WATERCOLOUR, SIGNED AND DATED 1819
In September 1817, Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet and his crew left the port of Toulon and sailed around the world. Adrien Aimé Taunay took part in the expedition as a draughtsman, producing a series of representations of the landscapes and peoples they encountered. The present drawing shows a boat from the Carolinas Islands. Although Louis de Freycinet's Voyage autour du monde fait par ordre du Roi sur les corvettes de S. M. ‘l'Uranie’ et ‘la physicienne’, pendant les années 1817, 1818, 1819 et 1820, published in Paris between 1824 and 1844, shows plans of this boat (pl.19 of the book, see fig.1 below), the drawing itself does not appear. It does, however, appear in the Journal de Madame Rose de Saulces de Freycinet, campagne de l'Uranie (1817-1820) (Paris, 1927 for the first edition, pl.19).
