Further details
A BRONZE RELIEF OF ‘LES CHÂTIMENTS’ (THE PUNISHMENTS), AIMÉ-JULES DALOU (1838-1902)
In this project for the tomb in the Panthéon, entitled Monument to Victor Hugo, Dalou encapsulates the profound admiration he held for the ‘Man of the Century’. Through a rich symbolic vocabulary, the sculptor pays tribute to Hugo's entire universe, his poems, and novels, including Notre-Dame de Paris, La Légende des siècles, and Les Quatre vents de l'esprit. At the centre of this triumphal arch stands a scene titled The Punishments, referencing Hugo's collection of satirical poems published in 1853.
Dalou created several independent reliefs on this subject in bronze, plaster, and ceramic, while the painter Félix Bracquemond (1833-1914) produced an etching of the subject, intended to illustrate an edition of the eponymous collection, thereby contributing to its success and dissemination.
