A natural history of birds. Illustrated with… copper plates, curiously engraved from the life… To which are added, notes and observations by W. Derham. London: W. Innys and R. Manby, 1731-1736-1740.
The first British bird book to be illustrated entirely with hand-coloured plates. The first two volumes were concerned mainly with British birds, while the third volume included more foreign species. Anker 4 & 5; Fine Bird Books (1990), p.71; Nissen IVB 14; Wood, p.184; Zimmer, p.3.

3 volumes, quarto (285 x 230mm). List of subscribers, 306 hand-coloured engraved plates, volume number on title of volume III corrected in ink manuscript (variable spotting and browning throughout, vol. II with first plate repaired with very minor loss to image, plates 32 and 60 just trimmed into image, plates 36-39 and adjacent text leaves with small stain in blank area, some text leaves with light marginal dampstain at head, vol. III with plate 93 just trimmed into caption and a few other plates trimmed close ). Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Rt. Hon. Lord Brownlow, Belton House (bookplates; sold at Sotheby’s 8 November 1971, lot 3) – thence by descent.
