Lot 148 | ALBIN, Eleazar (fl.1713-59)
Estimate value
£ 1 500 – 2 500
Insectorum Angliae naturalis historia. London: William Innys, 1731.
Very rare. First Latin edition of this English work on lepidoptera by one of the leading entomological illustrators of his day. Little is known about Albin’s origins, however in the preface to his 1720 publication Natural History of English Insects, he offers some insight into his background, writing ‘Teaching to Draw and Paint in Water-Colours, being my Profession, first led me to the observing of Flowers and Insects, with whose various Forms and beautiful Colours I was very much delighted; especially the latter, several of which I painted after the Life, for my own Pleasure’. The present work is illustrated with 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, all taken from Albin’s drawings, each one depicting the complete lifecycle of the given butterfly species and detailing their preferred plant. Each plate is dedicated to a subscriber of Albin’s work. Auction records list just one copy sold in the last 50 years. Nissen ZBI 59; Linsey 121.
Quarto (289 x 220mm). Title with engraved vignette and 100 hand-coloured engraved plates, wood-engraved capital and tailpieces (occasional spotting throughout, leaf A3 and A4 with repiaired marginal tears). Contemporary tree calf, covers with gilt roll-tool border, spine with 6 raised bands, the second compartment with red label lettered in gilt, the rest with ornate floral gilt decoration, marbled endpapers, edges stained green (extremities rubbed, very occasional surface loss to covers, spine with restoration to joints and foot, front free paper with crude pencil sketch). Provenance: Charles Echlin (engraved armorial bookplate).
