Lot 4173 | An Austro-Hungarian pelisse for senior officers of 9th Hussar Regiment, circa 1850
An Austro-Hungarian pelisse for senior officers of 9th Hussar Regiment, circa 1850
Fine green wool tunic body. Gilt: braid, fringe, cords, and buttons; white fur collar and cuffs; red cloth lining; green tunic with 16 rows of gold braid and white fur trim indicative of the 9th Austro-Hungarian Hussars; the Head of the Austrian 9th Hussars between 1833 and 1849 was Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. The tightly spaced chain gimp braid is of the pattern worn up to circa 1850. The longer tunic length cut may have been introduced for winter wear in the late 1840's - see comparable examples for the Hanoverian Guard Hussars, Sotheby's Royal House of Hanover sale, 2005. A very similar pelisse with nearly the same decoration and tunic length cut was worn by King George V of Hanover as General of Hussars at the time of his coronation in 1851 (collection of the Prince of Hanover).
