A New Song, Address'd to the Sons of Liberty, on the Continent of America; particularly to the illustrious, Glorious and never to be Forgotten Ninety-two of Boston. [Boston: Green & Russell, 1768].

An extremely rare broadside printing of one of the earliest patriotic songs of the American Revolution. The song appeared in Philadelphia papers in early August 1768 a month following the publication of John Dickinson's popular "Liberty Song." Within weeks, the song, which was to be sung to the tune, "Come jolly Bacchus" or "Glorious first of August," had appeared in Massachusetts papers. W.C. Ford noted that the woodcut device at the top "is the same which appeared on 'A New Year's Wish, from the Carrier of the Post-Boy & Advertiser, 1762,'" and attributes it to Green & Russell of Boston. The lengthy title is followed by a quote from William Pitt's speech opposing the Stamp Act: "The Americans are the Sons, not the Bastards of England; the Commons of America, represented in their several Assemblies, have ever been in Possession of the Exercise of this their Constitutional Right, of Giving and Granting their Own Money; they would have been Slaves, if they had not enjoyed it."

Rare, one of two or three copies extant. Both Bristol and Ford cite one copy at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Another copy appeared in the Edwin Whipple sale at C.F. Libbie, Boston, (7-8 April 1903, lot 1264) which may be the present copy. Bristol B2918; Evans 41853; Ford, W.C., 1457; Sabin 86867. Provenance: A.T. White — by descent to the consignor.
