Post lot text
After his arrest by the Spanish Francoists, 17-year-old Angel Alonso (1923-1994) left Spain for good to settle in Paris. This is where he met Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955) and Pierre Tal Coat (1905-1985), who had a decisive influence on his work. As soon as he arrived in Paris, Alonso voluntarily distanced himself from the art market, anxious to preserve his work — he even refused to exhibit at the prestigious Jeanne Bucher gallery in 1952. The artist maintained this distance for most of his career, allowing him to ensure a profoundly spiritual relationship with painting, free from material imperatives. His work is characterised by an exploration of the relationship between colour and natural materials; these monochromes frequently incorporate elements from the earth, such as straw, branches and mud. The three works presented in the collection of the Count and Countess Jean-Jacques de Flers illustrate the importance the artist attaches to the material substance of the painting itself, devoid of all colour and artifice.
