Lot 28 | Anonymous Parisian artist
Anonymous Parisian artist

An initial 'E' and an initial 'S' cut from an illuminated choirbook on vellum [Paris, c.1500]

Two illuminated initials cut from a turn-of-the-16th-century French choirbook.

The initial 'E': 112 x 115mm; the initial 'S': 118 x 130mm. Verso with text and music on a 4-line stave.

Provenance:

Daniel Burkhardt-Wildt (1752-1819), Basel silk manufacturer, artist, and co-founder of the Basler Künstlergeschellschaft; these cuttings were f.8 in the album of some 475 illuminated cuttings assembled for him by Birman in France, at a cost of 444 livres tournois; the album was bequeathed to his descendants and remained their property until dismembered for sale at Sotheby's 25 April 1983, when the present cuttings were lot 210, bought by 'Wellington'.

Illumination:

The bright blue staves of the initials with the delicate white tracery, and the burnished gold grounds with sprays of flowers are reminiscent of the initials in the Gradual for the use of the Sainte-Chapelle made for Anne of Brittany and Louis XII, datable between 1499-1514 and illuminated by the Master of Philippe of Guelders, an artist named after a Grande Vie de Jesus Christ painted for Philippe of Guelders, wife of René II de Lorraine. An initial 'C' with the Communion of St Denis was sold at Christie's on 9 December 2020, lot 7; further cuttings are an initial 'G' with Louis and Anne receiving the Crown of Thorns (Nantes, Musée Dobrée), and a historiated initial 'S' opening the Mass for a Confessor (formerly at Maggs).
