Estimate value

Anonymous Parisian illuminator
God Addressing Joshua in a historiated initial on one of two leaves of a Bible in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum [France, Paris?, middle or third quarter of 13th century].
Leaves from the quintessential manuscript of the 13th century: the Paris edition of the Bible in easily portable format.

c.190 × 140mm. 2 columns of 50 lines, below top line, the text comprising Deuteronomy 33:1–Joshua 1:9 and Jeremiah 19:5–22:23, the first with a 6-line illuminated initial with dragon-heads for the prologue, and a 7-line illuminated historiated initial for the biblical book, depicting one standing figure addressing another, apparently God and Joshua, the other leaf with four pen-flourished red and blue chapter initials (the historiated initial somewhat smudged, slight marginal staining).

Provenance:
(1) From the same unidentified manuscript as seven leaves in the McCarthy collection (see P. Kidd, McCarthy Collection, III (2021), no. 20), and others sold by Maggs from 1994 onwards.
(2) Colker MS 465; the unilluminated leaf acquired in 1996 from Maggs.
