António Costa Pinheiro war ein portugiesischer Künstler, dessen Werk sich zwischen Portugal, Deutschland und Frankreich entfaltete. Als Mitbegründer der Künstlergruppe KWY prägte er ab den späten 1950er Jahren die Erneuerung der portugiesischen Kunstszene.

Nach Studien in Lissabon und München ließ sich Costa Pinheiro 1963 dauerhaft in München nieder. Seine Arbeiten verbinden Erinnerung, Geschichte und Volkskultur mit konzeptuellen Ansätzen. Zu seinen bekanntesten Serien zählen imaginäre Porträts der portugiesischen Könige und der Zyklus Fernando Pessoa.

In den 1970er-Jahren wandte er sich zeitweise konzeptuellen Kunstformen zu, bevor er ab 1976 mit Werkreihen wie Fernando Pessoa zur Malerei zurückkehrte. Seine Werke wurden international ausgestellt, insbesondere in München, Lissabon und Porto. 2001 wurde er mit dem Großen Preis Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso ausgezeichnet.

Sein vielgestaltiges Ouvre - Malerei, Grafik, Objekte, Azulejos und Installationen - ist in bedeutenden Sammlungen vertreten, darunter das Lenbachhaus München, das Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian in Lissabon, das Museu do Chiado und die Fundação de Serralves in Porto. Costa Pinheiro gilt heute als eine der konsequentesten und eigenständigsten Positionen der portugiesischen Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts.
