ANTONIO ZUCCHI, FOUR DESIGNS: THE SPINNERS, THE BAKER’S PARLOR, THE LUNCH, THE FISHING LESSON, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BLACK INK, RED CHALK, WASH OF RED CHALK
These four drawings are preparatory for decorations at Home House in London’s Portman Square, three of them for the Back Parlour, the last for the so-called Etruscan Room. They are part of a vast program of decoration executed around 1777 by Antonio Zucchi, for Elizabeth, Countess of Home, and commissioned by her in 1773 from James Wyatt, who shortly afterwards was succeeded by Robert Adam. In addition to scenes from ancient history and mythology, contemporary literature and allegories, Zucchi also executed representations of daily life for this commission.
Recognized today as characteristic of Zucchi’s style, the decorations for Home House, like many of Robert Adam’s interior decorations, were long attributed to his more famous wife, Angelika Kauffmann (B. Baumgärtel, ‘Angelika Kauffmann und Antonio Zucchi. Die Dekorationsmalerei in England’, Angelika Kauffmann, exhib. cat., Düsseldorf, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Munich, Baus der Kunst, and Chur, Bündner Kunstmuseum, 1998-1999, p. 179). The attribution to Zucchi is supported by the comparison with an eighteenth-century pamphlet entitled Subjects of the Pictures Painted by Anthony Zucchi, for the Different Apartments at the Countess Dowager of Home's House, in Portman Square.
We are grateful to Bettina Baumgärtel for confirming the attribution after photographic examination and for her help in writing this notice.
