Arkham House

A fine set of the published works

ARKHAM HOUSE – a nearly complete run of the titles published by Arkham House. Sauk City, WI, 1939-1982 (and later).

The very fine Manney set of the complete run of the premiere horror publisher Arkham House through 1982, with additions from the intervening decades. Founded by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, Arkham House was created with the aim of printing weird and horror fiction which had previously only appeared in pulp magazines—beginning with H.P. Lovecraft, from whose stories the press got its title. Over time, they became one of the most important publishers of both new and classic horror, science fiction, and fantasy, with their author list ranging from Sheridan Le Fanu and Lord Dunsany to William Hope Hodgson, Robert Bloch, Evangeline Walton, and Ray Bradbury—to name only a few. Arkham House continues today, having passed into the hands of Derleth’s children and now grandchildren. Their jackets feature art by important fantasy illustrators; most of the early editions were designed by Robert Clyne and Frank Utpatel, with other artists including Gahan Wilson and Virgil Finlay contributing individual volumes. This is a complete run of their titles through the early 1980s, with new volumes added to the set since the present copy sold in the Manney sale in 1991. A true monument to America’s contributions to the world of weird fiction, in fabulous condition along with their dust jackets and sixteen volumes signed by their authors.

208 works in 209 volumes, octavo. Original cloth, dust jackets as issued. Provenance: Richard Manney (bookplate, Sotheby’s New York, 11 October 1991, lot 6).
