First edition of the classic monograph on lycanthropy. Sabine Baring-Gould, most famous now as the author of the hymn Onward Christian Soldiers, was an Anglican priest and antiquarian whose work on folklore influenced the uncanny tales of later writers including HP Lovecraft. Sadleir 159.
Octavo. Half-title, wood-engraved frontispiece, 2 pp. ads at end (occasional light spots and toning). With autograph note by Baring-Gould tipped to flyleaf. Publisher's red gilt-stamped cloth with werewolf vignette (spine worn, especially at caps, joints repaired). Custom box. Provenance: John R. Anderson (armorial bookplate).
