Lot 63 | Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
Estimate value

Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
Autograph letter signed ('Arnold Schönberg') to the senior typesetter ('Setzer-Faktor') [at Universal Edition], Mödling, 11 April 1922
In German. In pencil, two pages, 341 x 215mm.

Instructions for the printing of the third edition of the Harmonielehre. Schoenberg writes a note of explanation for the 'unusual condition' in which he returns the proofs: it contains so much new material that he understands the challenges it will pose. 'But I ask you to consider that I have not had less trouble with it myself', having worked painstakingly at it for 'many many months' over the last two years. He adds a list of requirements for the next proofs, beginning with 'Correct page layout', and the correct positioning of the new and altered plates, and continuing with line-numbering on each page, the correct type size for the chapter and section titles and ending with a request for the name and subject indexes in three copies.

Schoenberg's Harmonielehre (Theory of Harmony) remains one of the most influential works in 20th century music theory.
