A collection of artists' letters, with a signed copy of a speech given by Chagall at the synagogue of the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, for which he had designed the stained glass windows. Rossetti writes to Theodore Watts (‘my dear Watts’, later Watts-Dunston) in c.1878/9, telling him about an apparent series of caricatures of Frederick Leyland made by his protégé James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He writes about his relationship with ‘the Boulogne lady’ and mentions the Whistler-Ruskin libel trial. A tormented Ernst Barlach writes to Kurt Zube (22 February 1934), complaining about his lack of time and money as well as any sense of how to manage them. He feels he spends too much time writing ‘furious letters’. He feels he is a suspect but cannot think why. Emil Orlík writes affectionately to János Plesch (Genoa, 30 August 1927), updating him on the correspondence he has received from their friends. He has not read a newspaper in four weeks, instead spending his mornings watching the sun rise over the sea. He has painted the portrait of a sea captain in parade uniform while on a trip aboard the ship ‘Cimarosa’. He mentions visits to Livorno, Florence and Rome. He attaches a photograph of himself at his easel on the deck of the ‘Cimarosa’. With a long letter in Russian by Bakst.
