FLAMSTEED, John (1649-1719). Atlas céleste. Paris: Lamarche, 1795.

French Revolutionary edition of Flamsteed. Fifth edition, but stated third edition. This is essentially the same contents as in the previous lot, but with the star tables updated to 1800, "a scale of stellar magnitude added at the foot of each plate, and several constellations invented since 1776 now appear, two of them styled as telescopes honoring William Herschel" (Hammond). The new editors are "Citoyens Lalande & Méchain." Joseph Jérôme Le Français de Lalande (1732-1807) was an historian of paper-making and an early bibliographer of astronomy. Hammond, p.82.

Quarto (219 x 145mm). With 30 double-page engraved star maps on guards. Contemporary quarter roan and paste-paper boards, morocco lettering piece (spine rubbed, hinges cracked and some wear and staining to endpapers). Provenance: Ex Libris Cercle" inscribed on inside cover.
