ATTRIBUTED TO JACOB BACKER, A STANDING MAN, BLACK CHALK, WATERMARK DOG IN A CROWNED BLASON

The drawing is strongly reminiscent of the figure studies in black chalk, often heightened with white, by Jacob Backer, such as two in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 9041, 22865; see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, I (1979), nos. 1, 63, ill.; and Leslie Schwartz in Jacob Backer (1608/9-1651), exhib. cat., Amsterdam, Museum Het Rembrandthuis, and Aachen, Suermondt-Ludwig Museum, 2008-2009, nos. 39, 51, ill.). However, these examples and numerous other ones are all, or nearly all, made on blue paper.
