ATTRIBUTED TO WILLEM DROST, THE DISMISSAL OF HAGAR AND ISHMAEL, PEN AND BROWN INK, PEN AND BROWN INK FRAMING LINES
Various drawn versions by artists from Rembrandt’s circle are known of this scene from Genesis (21:14), including two by the master himself, dating from the 1650s, at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (inv. RP-T-1930-2), and the British Museum, London (inv. 1910,0212.175; see O. Benesch, The Drawings of Rembrandt, London, 1973, V, nos. 916, 962, fig. 1194, 1244; Martin Royalton-Kisch, Catalogue of Drawings by Rembrandt and his School, published online at www. britishmuseum.org, 2010, consulted October 2022, no. 50, ill.; and P. Schatborn, Tekeningen van Rembrandt, zijn onbekende leerlingen en navolgers, The Hague 1985, no. 40, ill.). Peter Schatborn has suggested an attribution of the present sheet to Willem Drost, who was a student of Rembrandt in the late 1640s or early 1650s. This view is shared – with due caution – by Martin Royalton-Kisch, who dates the drawing around 1652-1655 (confirmed by e-mail, 27 February 2023). Parallels for the finely drawn faces and extensive use of hatching can be found in drawings by Drost such as one in the Kunsthalle Bremen (inv. 54/437; see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, III (1980), no. 546, ill.; and A. Röver-Kann, Rembrandt, oder nicht? Zeichnungen von Rembrandt und seinem Kreis aus den Hamburger und Bremer Kupferstichkabinetten, exhib. cat., Kunsthalle Bremen, 2000-2001, no. 10, ill.). Other drawings illustrating scenes from and attributed to Drost are in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin (inv. KdZ 1120), and the Pierpont Morgan Library and Museum, New York (inv. I,195; see Sumowski, op. cit., nos. 551, 563, ill.).
