Further details
BARENT GAEL, HORSES AND FARMERS, GRAPHITE, BRUSH, GREY WASH
The Dutch painter and draughtsman Barent Gael seems to have had a particular love of horses, which were very often the main subject of his work. Here he has chosen to place an equine figure at the center of the composition, though with the further inclusion of a group of travelers. The artist's distinctive technique of brushing the drawing with successive light washes, ultimately revealing the white of the paper only in the form of points of light in the most important places, can be easily admired here. A drawing using this same technique and of the same subject is in the De Boer Foundation, Amsterdam (inv. 595).
