Post lot text BARENT PETERSZ. AVERCAMP, FISHERMEN COLLECTING NETS ON THE EDGE OF A LAKE, OIL ON PANEL, SIGNEDAs a nephew and pupil of Hendrick Avercamp (1585-1634), one of the most important representatives of the 17th-century Dutch school of winter landscape painting, the young Barent follows in his master's footsteps by reproducing his famous fishing and skating scenes from the area around Kampen and the river Ijssel in the present-day province of Overijssel. Our painting strongly evokes Avercamp's lively and colourful landscapes, whose space is often defined by trees and houses that enclose the composition, as well as the rather low horizon line characteristic of Hendrick Avercamp’s mature works. However, unlike his uncle, Barent does not dwell on narrative details, a style perpetrated by Pieter Brueghel the Elder (circa 1525-1569) and separates himself from his uncle’s trademark winter landscapes. Clara J. Welcker reminds us that our painting is a Zomerrivierlandschap ('River landscape in summer'). Barent also updates his uncle's scenes: having outlived him by almost a century, the feathered burrs and hats in his uncle’s pictures are replaced by less fanciful and colourful clothes. Barent Avercamp painted different versions of our composition. One of them, with more figures, was sold at Christie's in Paris on 21 June 2011, lot 14 (C. J. Welcker, op. cit., p. 3029, n°B.A. S 5.5.). As in the work of his uncle, some of Barent Avercamp's figures reappear in various compositions by the painter. This is the case of the milking woman, standing on the left of our painting, which we find in a painting sold at Sotheby's in London on 8 July 1988, lot 13.
