Post lot text JOHANNES LEEMANS, TROMPE-L'OEIL ON THE THEME OF HUNTING, OIL ON CANVAS, SIGNEDThe work of the Hague painter Johannes Leemans (1633-1688) is characterised by trompe l'oeil still lifes with a hunting theme. This genre was very popular among collectors and artists at the time and is characterized by the work of Cornelis Biltius (1653-circa 1686). In our painting, the equipment of a fowler is depicted: birdcalls, nets, cages, pouches and hunting horns are skilfully arranged on a wall in anticipation of the next outing. The central cage probably contains a kestrel, a bird of prey used for hunting birds and small mammals. This composition is reminiscent of the painting L'attirail de l'oiseleur by the same artist in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels (inv. 7002).
