First edition of the so-called 'Small Barth. About Murzuk, Ghat, And Agades,

Kano and Kuka reached Barth, the unexplored lands of Adamawa,

to the East of the Chad lake and explored and then located the Sultanate of Baghirmi and moved

finally, to the West to the mysterious Timbuktu, where he seven

Months stayed.

Barth (1821 - 1865), studied in Berlin, geography, linguistics, and

Archaeology. 1845-47, he traveled to Gibraltar from North Africa, Palestine,

Asia minor and Greece. ...In 1850 he joined a number of ... the Expedition of the

Englishman James Richardson through the Interior of North Africa. ... (1852)

he explored alone the Sahara and present-day Sudan; he won new

ethnographic, geographic and linguistic knowledge. ...

In 1859, back to Berlin; 1863, he was Professor of geography and President of the
