€ 12 000 – 18 000

Rest on the Flight into Egypt
Oil on canvas. 105 x 82 cm. Relined. Restored. Minor damage to frame (117 x 98 cm).
For two other versions of the composition:
Cf. Dorotheum, Vienna, auction 15 May 1979, catalogue number 60 (with illustration): a painting by the still young artist Caspar Jele (1814 Freidsberg - 1893 Innsbruck), which, according to his signature, he painted at the age of 14 1/2. Slightly smaller in format than the work offered (91 x 70 cm), Jele renders the composition almost identically. Jele's painting is believed to be a copy, possibly after the present painting.
Another version of the composition (105 x 78 cm) was recently offered at auction. Cf. Gliubich Casa d'Aste, L'Aquila (Abruzzo), Auction 19, 30 August 2023, catalogue number 274 (with illustration): catalogued there as a work by a "Veneto painter of the first half of the 18th century."
Cf. Metzler, Sally, Bartholomeus Spranger - Splendor and Eroticism in Imperial Prague.
