Lot 82 | BEARDSLEY, Aubrey (1872-1898)
Estimate value
2000GBP £ 2 000 – 3 000
The Story Of Venus And Tannhäuser in which is set forth an exact account of the manner of State held by Madam Venus, Goddess and Meretrix, under the famous Hörselberg, and containing the Adventures of Tannhäuser in that Place, his Repentance, his Journeying to Rome and Return to the Loving Mountain. A Romantic Novel... Now first printed from the Original Manuscript. London: For Private Circulation, 1907.
First edition of the complete text, number 94 of 250 copies on hand made paper, with a page from a draft of the original autograph manuscript tipped in on page 52. The manuscript shows variations with the printed text with some sections not included in the published work; a second hand has edited some of the text. The unfinished novel Venus and Tannhäuser exhibits to the full Beardsley’s penchant for shocking readers and mocking aesthetic conventions. Its nominal source is the medieval legend featuring a troubadour who sins by visiting the subterranean kingdom to which Venus has been exiled by Christianity. Beardsley was working on the novel in late 1894 and Lane announced publication for early 1895. After the first (expurgated) chapters appeared in The Savoy, 'Smithers announced [in the July 1896 issue] that serialisation was discontinued, but that it would be published in book form with numerous illustrations as soon as Beardsley was well enough to complete it.' Lasner 151.
Quarto (258 x 193mm). Page of autograph manuscript draft tipped in on page 52, with corrections in a second hand. Original boards, printed paper label on upper cover (rebacked in vellum, sides very slightly soiled). Provenance: Harry Glemby (book-label) — Barry Humphries (1934-2023; bookplate).
