Japan. Meiji Period, Mid-19th Century. Century

ivory, undercut, very detailed Relief carved pattern finely engraved, the eyes dark-painted. A scream fixed in front of the gate (torii) of a Tenmangû Shrine of the pine trees and blooming
cherries. Among the more than sixty persons, a Falconer, more Samurai,
traders, jugglers and musicians, players, brushwood makers, Teegerät-, grilling -, and
trays, seller, as well as numerous children playing. In the midst of the crowd
Suguwara Michizane (845-903), revered in Tenmangû shrines as a God of learning
hilarious. Although he has covered his face with a cloth, he is a
blossoming plum branch and a knotted letter identifiable. Height 47cm, bottom Dia 16.3 cm, top 15cm. Condition A/B.
