Lot 2198 Pair of large Panels with heavenly music can
Japan. Meiji Period. 1900.

Wood with a dark blue or green varnish, deposits in Shibayama-style with ivory, mother-of-pearl and coral. Western Gold Frame. On each of the Panels three elegant floating, rich in the style of the Chinese Tang dynasty, dressed ladies, surrounded by fluttering ribbons. This is the final date, our angels and similar beings, inhabit in the East Asian idea of the heavenly spheres and music. Here they are shown with drums, flute and a mouth organ, a a Lotus holding flower. Each has a large hôô bird and flowering Paulownia branches (kiri) - a Symbol of peace.

The motifs are carved with many fine Details in precious materials. The faces of the ladies are almost shown a portrait of imprisonment, the hairstyles lavishly decorated with hair, arrows and jewels. A masterpiece of the craftsmanship of the Meiji period. Each height 181cm, width 88.5 cm. signed: Mizue. Seal: Naitô. Condition A/B.
