Genauer Fundort bekannt.
The sturdy, double-edged blade with shallow fullers on both sides reaching almost to the point. Core forged of twisted Damascus strands, the lateral cutting edges attached separately. Short iron quillons with an elongated oval profile. A continuous bronze banner with inscription down the middle, the engraved letters bearing remnants of silver inlays. The chamfered edges with fine bronze band inlays. Sturdy, slightly tapered tang. The pommel forged in two pieces, the lower section with another bronze inscription band. The rest of the surface covered with fine thread inlays in bronze. Length 98 cm.
The capitalis rustica inscription is probably written in highly abbreviated medieval Latin and therefore difficult to make out. The word "BENEDICT" can be seen on the quillons. Moreover, there are straight-armed crosses and other unidentified symbols between some of the letters. However, the inscription is a clear indication that the sword must have once belonged to a person of high rank.
Provenance: Discovered during excavation works in a private gravel pit near the Rhine in the 1960s, thereafter remaining in the estate of the finder's family. The exact location is known.
