The most famous third Estienne folio Bible, the first one published with woodcut illustrations. "The text was revised from additional MS sources; a list given at the end of the preface enumerates at least 16 MSS and 3 printed editions. This edition contains the first printing of the Prayer of Manasses, in Greek and Latin. It is the text of this monumental edition which became the foundation of the official Roman vulgate ..." (Schreiber, 59). "Quite simply the most remarkable and original typographical treatment of the Bible ever printed... That of 1540 incorporates refinements of detail... The 1540 folio thus has a claim to be considered the most beautiful bible ever printed" (The Cambridge History of the Bible 3, pp.437-438).
