Lot 2181Bodhisattva Maitreya
Gandhara. 2./3. Century

Schist with Patina. Standing in a slight double post on a high Base with flowers in relief. The elegant folds at the end of the robe makes the body to Shine through. He is richly adorned and his hair are highly plugged in.

An exquisite sculpture of a standing Bodhisattva in an elegant and lively attitude. The sensual expression on his face, he turned to the viewer, is characterised by compassion, and attention. His missing right Hand would be raised in abhaya mudra (no fear gesture), while his left Hand would have held the fold of his Robe, or of Maitreya bottle. He stands on a pedestal decorated with stylized Lotus flowers.

Its a long, pleated Robe flatters elegantly with his body and his shoulders in cascading folds over the legs visible under the robe. In the Drapery of the garments of the Greek-Roman influence is clearly visible. The simple monastic robe that enveloped his powerful body contrasts wonderfully with the lush ornaments on the chest, the ears and in the elegant, wavy hairstyle of the Bodhisattvas. Three small holes under the arms and between the feet to show that the sculpture was originally mounted in a niche or on a wall.

While a number of Bodhisattva images from the Gandhara era are known to show only a few of the extremely sublime realism and delicacy of this sculpture. Height 52cm. Condition B.
