Lot 2180The Bodhisattva Lokeshvara
Khmer. Approx. a 10. Century

Bronze with reddish and green Patina. Vierarmig, standing on a square base plate. The hair is of elegant high-resolution and adorned, and large drop earrings. The hips attached to a sampot made of a fine fabric, wrapped with a belt.

The jewel of the Banteay Srei temple, approximately about 40 km from Angkor Thom, is based, in contrast to most of the other temples, not on a Royal Foundation. A dedication inscription, dated to 967/968, shall designate Yajnyavaraha, a brahmin and Royal teacher of the future king Jayavarman V, as its founder. Only a handful of bronzes this style can be attributed to considered to be one of the most refined of the Angkor statues. Less than twenty stone sculptures of this style are known. The fragmentary Bodhisattva Lokeshvara from Tuol Chi Thep, now in the Musée Guimet, Paris (see Baptist and Zéphir), is probably one of the most beautiful stone sculptures of Banteay Srei-time.

This remarkable bronze sculpture showing the Bodhisattva lokesvara, is closely related with the figure from Tuol Chi Thep. She is exquisitely modeled, with a sense of the sublime realism - what can be considered as the magic of the works of Banteay Srei. The volumes of the muscular body are good ausblanciert and the powerful chest seems to be with the dynamic energy of the inner Prana filled. Separately modeled attributes, possibly in precious metal, and now lost, were set in the four hands. The hairstyle is a typical Jatamukuta from the 10. Century, originally likely to be a tiny seated Amitabha-covered Buddha.

their sculptural Finesse and rarity of this Bronze Lokeshvara sculptures an important addition to the small detachment of the previously known Banteay Srei style. Height of 37.7 cm. Condition A/B. enclosed: On a Pedestal. Matching Storage Box.
