BONNARD, Pierre (1867-1947). Les Pastorales de Longus, ou Daphnis et Chloé. Traduction de Messire J. Amyot…revue…par Paul-Louis Courier. Paris : Ambroise Vollard, 1902. L’un des illustrés modernes les plus célèbres –exemplaire sur Chine. Séduit par sa première collaboration avec Pierre Bonnard sur Parallèlement de Verlaine (1900), Ambroise Vollard lui en commande un second, ces Pastorales. Là où Parallèlement, avec ses audaces de maquette et le choix de tirer les lithographies en rose, avait dérouté, l'agencement de ce second livre est plus classique, l'illustration étant clairement séparée du texte. Il reste cependant, au moment de sa parution, "boudé par les bibliophiles, qui refusent longtemps d'y voir une technique d'illustration appropriée pour le livre de luxe car jugée trop commerciale, voire vulgaire" (Édition limitée. Vollard, Petiet et l'estampe de maîtres, pp. 44-45). Ce jugement a largement été révisé par leurs successeurs, et l'ouvrage est aujourd'hui considéré comme l'une des plus belles réussites du livre illustré. Carteret, Illustrés IV, p. 242 : bel ouvrage, très recherché et très coté. Une des plus grandes vedettes du livre moderne ; « Like Bonnard’s earlier lithographs for Parallèlement and Manet’s for Le Corbeau, these subtle plates had little appeal in 1902 for a public that preferred the sharply defined realism of the professional engraver. The edition of two hundred fifty was not exhausted for twenty years. Nethertheless the book is today considered one of the finest of its period”. In-4 (332 x 255 mm). 155 lithographies originales de Pierre Bonnard, tirées en gris. Tirage total à 250 exemplaires, celui-ci l’un des 40 sur Chine (second papier après 10 de tête sur Japon ancien), n°36, devant comporter une double suite des lithographies – cette double suite manque au présent exemplaire. Couverture illustrée, chemise, étui. China paper copy of one of the finest illustrated books of the 20th century, comprising 155 original lithographs by Pierre Bonnard. The present copy lacks the additional suite of plates.
