[BRATHWAIT, Richard (1588?-1673)]

Barnabae itinerarium ... Barnabees journall, under the names of Mirtilus & Faustulus shadowed: for the travellers solace lately published, to most apt numbers reduced, and to the old tune of Barnabe commonly chanted. [London: Printed by John Haviland, 1638].

Extremely rare first complete edition of this 'sprightly record of English travel, in Latin and English doggerel verse... Southey pronounced the original the best piece of rhymed Latin in modern literature' (DNB II, 1142). This is the first edition with all four parts and 'Bessie Bell'; STC 3555.7 records a Latin edition of 2 parts only published in 1636. Written under the pseudonym, Corymbaeus, Richard Braithwait records the lively adventures of Barnabee drunkenly touring England. ESTC S106155 (recording only 4 copies in the British Isles, and 9 in the USA); STC 3556.

Four parts in one volume, 16mo (105 x 79mm). π1 A-2E8, letterpress Latin title 'Barnabæ itinerarium...', additional engraved title signed by William Marshall, text in Latin and English, parts 2-4 and 'Bessie Bell' at end each with two title pages in Latin and English, text printed within metalcut ornaments (C4 mis-signed D4, Q3 mis-signed P3, T3 mis-signed X3, leaves X7-8 trimmed close at head just into ornament at head, very minor marginal repair to 2A5, the whole sometime washed and pressed). Late 19th-/early 20th-century tan morocco, gilt edges and turn-ins (extremities faintly rubbed); contained in a modern cloth box. Provenance: Frank Graham (20th-century bookplate).
