Mehrfarbiges Mosaik aus kubischen Tesserae in Originallage, modern auf Betonplatte montiert. Breite 75 cm. Höhe 76,5 cm. In einem zentralen Tondo Brustbild des Orpheus mit phrygischer Mütze, mit nach halbrechts gerichtetem Antlitz eine Lyra spielend. In den Zwickeln des Rechtecks, in welchem das Tondo mit Brustbildnis eingearbeitet ist, vier Dreiecke. Links unten und rechts oben auf Schwarzweißtöne reduziert, links oben und rechts unten hingegen mit zusätzlichen braunen und rötlichen Farben. Das Tondo eingerahmt von einem weiß gehaltenen äußeren Kreis und einem bunten inneren Kreis aus ineinandergreifenden Haken. Die beiden Kreise durch schwarze Linien eingefasst.
Das Brustbild des Orpheus mit Gelb-, Rot- und Brauntönen gestaltet, die Linienführung durch schwarze Steine hervorgehoben, Glanzlichter durch helle und weiße Steine. Unter der phrygischen Mütze fällt dem Sänger und Dichter das lange Haar auf die Schulter. Um den Rand der phrygischen Mütze ein Lorbeerkranz, dargestellt mit Tesserae in Grüntönen. Über seinem Gewand trägt Orpheus einen Mantel, der an der Brustmitte von einer Scheibenfibel zusammengehalten wird. Abgesehen von geringfügigen Fehlstellen attraktives römisches Mosaik der mittleren Kaiserzeit.
Provenienz: Rheinische Privatsammlung, erworben um 1990 in der Aachener Dependance eines Brüsseler Kunsthändlers.

Multi-coloured mosaic made of cubic tesserae in original position, mounted on a concrete slab in modern times. Width 75 cm. Height 76.5 cm. In a central tondo, a bust portrait of Orpheus with a Phrygian cap, playing a lyre with his face turned half-right. Four triangles in the spandrels of the rectangle in which the tondo with the bust portrait is incorporated. Bottom left and top right reduced to black and white tones, top left and bottom right with additional brown and reddish colours. The tondo is framed by a white outer circle and a colourful inner circle of interlocking hooks. The two circles are bordered by black lines.
The bust of Orpheus created with tesserae in shades of yellow, red and brown, the lines emphasised by black stones, highlights by light and white stones. Under the Phrygian cap, the long hair of the singer and poet falls onto his shoulders. Around the edge of the Phrygian cap is a laurel wreath, depicted with tesserae in shades of green. Orpheus wears a cloak over his robe, which is held together at the centre of his chest by a disc brooch. Apart from minor losses, an attractive Roman mosaic from the Middle Imperial period.
Provenance: Rhenish private collection, acquired circa 1990 in the Aachen branch of a Brussels art dealer.

The information about the auction winners is confidential. The auction winner will receive a direct notification from the auction house responsible with instructions for further action: an invoice for payment and the manner in which the goods will be received.
Each of the auction houses has its own payment policy for the won lots. All auction houses accept bank transfers, most of them accept credit card payments. Shipment of the won lot depends on its size. Small items can be delivered by post. Larger lots are sent by courier. Employees of the auction houses will offer you a wide range to choose from.
