1940. Öl/Lw. 37,5 x 49,5 cm. R. u. monogr. und dat. CH 40. Hofer hatte sich 1940 von Berlin nach Konstanz zurückgezogen. Dort ließ er sich im Stadtteil Staad nieder, wo er auch die Loretto-Kapelle malte. - Literatur: WVZ: Wohlert 1507 - Provenienz: Vom ersten Besitzer in Süddeutschland direkt beim Künstler erworben; zuletzt Privatsammlung Niedersachsen - Deutscher Maler, einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der figurativen Malerei der Zwischen- und Nachkriegszeit. H. studierte an der Karlsruher Akademie bei L. von Kalckreuth und H. Thoma; es folgte ein Romaufenthalt. Als letzter 'Deutsch-Römer' war er unter den ersten Mitgliedern der Neuen Künstlervereinigung München, von der sich 1911 der 'Blaue Reiter' abspaltete. In den 1920er Jahren bildete H. einen expressiven, aber weiterhin durch klare Konturen und feste Formarchitektur gekennzeichneten Stil aus. 1949 wurde er Direktor der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin.
