Estimate value
15000GBP £ 15 000 – 20 000
Pentaestheseion, hoc est, De quinque sensibus liber, organorum fabricam variis iconibus fideliter aere incisis illustratam, nec non actionem et usum, discursu anatomico & philosophico accurate explicata continens. Venice: Nicolas Misserino, [1609].
Rare first edition, from the library of Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) and his wife Gasparde de La Chastre (1577-1616). Only one other copy of the first edition is recorded at auction (RBH) in over 50 years. ‘Casserio was next to the last in line of great anatomists in the Vesalian tradition at Padua. Medical historians rank the accuracy and artistry of the illustrations […] of Casserio in the same category as those of Vesalius, with Casserio setting the standard in copperplates as Vesalius had done in woodcuts' (Heirs of Hippocrates, p. 146). NLM 2200; Waller I, 1810; not in Norman or Wellcome.
Folio (420 x 262mm). Title within elaborate engraved border, 33 full-page engravings of anatomical subjects, errata and colophon leaf at end (X4 and Z1 with small loss at margins, not affecting text or images, minor dust-staining). Contemporary brown morocco with large stamped arms of De Thou and his second wife Gasparde de La Chastre (1577-1616) to sides [Olivier 216.7], triple gilt filet border to sides, spine in seven compartments with raised bands gilt, lettered in the second and with the monogram of De Thou and his wife’s initials [Olivier 216.9] repeated in the others, gilt edges (joints splitting at ends, binding somewhat rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: Jacques-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) and his wife Gasparde de La Chastre (1577-1616), arms to sides and monogram to spine – Royal Society of Medicine (2 ink stamps to title [Medical and Chirurgical Society])
