Lot 52 | Cent cinq costumes des départemens de la Seine inférieure
LANTÉ, Louis-Marie (1789-?), and Georges-Jacques GATINE (1773-1841?). Cent cinq costumes des départemens de la Seine inférieure, du Calvados, de la Manche et de l'Orne. Paris: Durand ainé; Caen: Mancel, [c.1830].

Colorful costume book of feminine dress in Normandy in the early 19th century. Second edition. Village and rural scenes serving as backgrounds are also of great pictorial interest. The plates are signed by Gatine after original art by Lanté, with La Mésangere providing the text for the first edition (not included in this second edition). Lanté and Gatine collaborated on several other French costume books, including Costumes parisiens (1824) and Costumes des femmes de Hambourg, du Tyrol, de la Hollande (1827), and an untitled work on the costume of the middle and upper classes (1828; Colas 1775). Brunet III, 795; Colas (listing first ed. of 1827 only); Lipperheide (1965) Fe3.

Quarto (330 x 255mm). Hand-colored engraved title and 105 hand-colored engraved plates by Gatine after Lanté (title lightly soiled, occasional light spotting and marginal toning to plates). 19-century half calf over marbled boards (spine worn, front joint cracked).
