CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (1547-1616)
El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha. Milan: Heredero de Pedromartir Locarni y Juan Bautista Bidello, 1610.
First edition published in Italy: a very large, untrimmed copy, preserving deckle edges, in an early board binding. Don Quixote won immediate fame when first printed in 1605, with copies disseminated across Europe and as far as Lima. Its popularity and literary legacy has meant it has become ‘to Spanish literature what Shakespeare is to English’ (Bloom), while it is globally regarded as ‘one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times’ (PMM). The tenth overall edition of part one, it follows editions printed at Madrid, Lisbon, Valencia, and Brussels, and precedes both the publication of part two (Madrid: 1615) and the earliest translation of the first part into English (London: 1612). The editor changes the addressee of Cervantes's dedication, but the text otherwise follows that of the second edition printed by Juan de la Cuesta in 1605. Brunet 1748; Palau 51983; Suñé 10.

Octavo (163 x 114mm). Title with woodcut device, woodcut opening initials, untrimmed throughout, Y1-2 and 3-4 unopened (a few minor chips in margins and one on 2Y1 with minor loss of a few letters, some spots and faint stains). Contemporary marbled boards (upper board with small stains, faintly rubbed); modern custom cloth box. Provenance: Ken Rapoport (label on front pastedown).
